How can I verify someone’s claim to have received a Silver Star?

A resume states that a person received a Silver Star (F.O.P):
What does F.O.P. stand for, and what must a soldier do to receive a Silver Star?
Also claims to have received “Navy and Marine Corps Medal – Heroism”.

It would be on their DD-214 (discharge papers). Tell them that you need to see a copy to verify military service and type of discharge.
Note: It appears that some police departments also award a Silver Star so F.O.P. may stand for Fraternal Order Of Police. I have never heard of it in reference to the military award. For a service member to receive it read this: http://www.homeofheroes.com/silverstar/
